MyAnimeList Site Access Was Banned in Russia

Controversial content was surfaced?

The Moscow Times reported last October 28th that the largest Anime database website, MyAnimeList, has been banned in Russia. Reason to its ban is due to its controversial contents — to mention, it’s LGBTQ+ contents present in Anime.

Federal media watchdog Roskomnadzor has placed MyAnimeList into its national blacklist of sites banned in Russia without citing a formal reason. Any users attempting to access the website will receive an error message.

Roskomnadzor said the ban could be reversed if the said platform could remove the content which is deemed inappropriate in Russian laws.

The government has pursued measures against the LGBTQ+ expression under the “gay propaganda” laws, which was first passed in 2013, and were expanded in years.

Russia’s Supreme Court has issued a landmark ruling declaring this “international LGBT public movement” as “extremist”.

MyAnimeList (often shortened as MAL) is a popular online platform and community focused on anime and manga tracking, reviews, and discussions.

MyAnimeList helps users to track, organize, discover, and to rate and review some existing Anime and Manga titles released.
